Rainbow Fence Mosaic

Hundreds of hand-painted fences united in hope, resilience, and joy.

Recently Anne Brodsky and I went around Key West and took photos of rainbow fences. I combined hundreds of our photos to create this mosaic of rainbow fences. If you look closely, you might recognize some of them.

For years the rainbow crosswalks on Duval Street in Key West reflected the city’s One Human Family ideals of equality, inclusivity, and universal compassion. When the state of Florida painted over the crosswalks, residents embodied those ideals by painting their fences the colors of the rainbow flag. When a city commission banned this practice, Anne Brodsky, the fencefairy, started painting mini rainbow pickets to bring hope, resilience, and joy to the community. Now you can find thousands of hand-painted rainbow fences in Key West and throughout the country.

You can purchase your own rainbow fence mosaic here at the gallery. I’ve created matted 8.5 x 11 prints using archival photo paper. $100. Half of the proceeds go to support LGBTQ+ organizations.
