Throwing Large

Mark has been throwing some larger forms since recuperating from surgery.

Mark says, “Working larger gives me room to make a stronger gesture. I enjoy the physical challenge and the problem-solving, but what I’m really after is presence—a piece that can hold its own in a room without shouting.”

He explains further, “I like finding the point where a large pot stops feeling like an enlarged version of a smaller one and begins to feel architectural. At that scale, the form has its own gravity. You respond to it with more than your eyes.”

Mark isn’t interested in making something large merely for the sake of scale. What draws him to larger forms is the way scale magnifies his decisions. Proportion becomes a point of tension. The pot begins to occupy space almost like another presence.
