How to care for your art

Living with art is one of life’s quiet joys—and with just a little care, your ceramics and photographs will stay beautiful for years to come.

For pottery, think gentle

Mark’s stoneware pieces are tough. You can safely put them in the dishwasher, microwave, and oven. But a little extra care goes a long way in terms of making them last. Avoid sudden temperature changes by placing baking dishes in the oven before preheating. Avoid putting plates in the microwave with food that will get extremely hot in the middle while the edges of the plate remain cool. And like Mark says, he still can’t get his ceramics to bounce.

For photos, think light

Sarah’s metal prints are tough, too. You can hang them outside, but keeping them out of direct sunlight will keep them from fading. You can keep them clean and scratch-free by wiping them lightly with a microfiber cloth.

Use and enjoy your art every day

Art comes to life when you pay attention to it, so use and enjoy it every day. These small steps help preserve the texture of clay and the depth of a photograph’s tones, so every piece you bring into your home can keep telling its story.
