How to touch a piece of pottery

Last month I wrote about how to read a photograph in terms of seeing it as a work of art. You can experience a piece of pottery in a similar way.

What is your initial emotional reaction?

Your first reaction to a piece of pottery is usually an emotional one. What is it about the piece that grabs your attention and invites you to reach out for it?

How does it feel in your hands?

Notice the weight, the curves, and the surface texture. Pay attention to the lip of a cup or mug. Mark says it should feel like a kiss when you bring it to your lips.

How does it function?

Form and function have to complement each other so you’ll feel good about using your pottery every day. Mark’s forms are tried and true. Every shape bears a record of his hands, something that no machine can replicate.

Come by the gallery and experience it yourself—read a photograph with your eyes, and feel a pot with your hands!
